About Peter Young

I have over twenty years of lived experience of the forensic mental health and prison system. I have been in all levels of security, low, medium and high. I’ve experienced years of psychological therapy for a ptsd and personality disorder diagnosis. I have received CBT, DBT, EMDR and participated in all manner of group therapy’s for violent offenders and substance abuse.I have experienced excellent care and very poor care, I believe that these experiences and my desire to help create services that are safe, effective and meaningful for the service users makes my contribution,whilst unique and unusual, powerful and authentic. There aren’t many people in the country who have had similar experiences (especially the high security service) who are able to do this work and make an impact towards better services. I currently work for the lived experience network, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the knowledge and understanding framework, west London, the cqc, Sussex partnership, Bedfordshire university, NHS England, Kingston university and in these roles I train, teach, interview, provide feedback and use my lived experiences to provide a unique insight into what’s good, what’s bad and suggestions on how to make it better.
