Background

About Phil Coleman

I first joined The Open University as an Associate Lecturer in 2003. After increasing my teaching portfolio, undertaking consultancy work and becoming an OU VQAC Assessor, I accepted the post of Staff Tutor in 2007. My professional background is in the field of mental health and as a Registered Mental Health Nurse and Nurse Tutor I have over 30 years of varied experience within the NHS, independent care, FE and HE sectors. This experience has included leading clinical and academic teams as well as managing innovative, collaborative curriculum development projects. I have held appointments as an External Examiner for the Foundation Degree Assistant Practitioner at Liverpool John Moores University, the BA Joint Honours Health & Social Care/Health in Contemporary Society programme at Northumbria University and the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care at Manchester Metropolitan University. In 2013, I was appointed Associate Dean - Nations & Regions with responsibility for the strategic management of Faculty teams based in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Leeds, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Oxford. In addition, I represented all seven Central Academic Units on several groups at a University-wide level. My term of office as Associate Dean ended in 2016 and, having gained promotion to Senior Lecturer, I returned to my substantive role in north east England to pursue my academic interests. I have been a member of the editorial board of the open access journal 'Annual Review of Education, Communication and Language Sciences' hosted by Newcastle University and the 'International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship' and have been an academic reviewer for work submitted to Blackwell Science, BMJ publishing, DeGruyter, Elsevier and Pearson Publishing. In January 2024 I took early retirement but continue my research and scholarship as an Honorary Associate.
