About Phil Galloway

Phil founded Syncline Energy in 2005. The company works with communities to deliver clean energy infrastructure, with more than $8Bn built, under construction or in late stage development, including:(i) Syncline Community Cable a critical underground HVDC link that will run 265km between Melbourne and North West Victoria. The project mobilises +3GW of renewable energy capacity and provides vital grid stability benefits to keep-the-lights-on. The project is supported by farmers and has minimal environmental impacts.(ii) Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub, at 1.6GWh for Side A, it is one of the world's biggest batteries. Commissioning started in August 2025. Syncline originated the project and developed it through to construction. Equis, a green infrastructure investor, became the majority owner in early-2022. In November 2023 the newly formed SECV became a 36% owner of MREH Side A, putting the Victorian Government at the heart of the State's energy 110MW Bannerton Solar Park, which supplies green power to Melbourne's tram network. Foresight Solar Fund Limited of the UK became the owner in late-2017 at the start of construction.(iv) Micro grids in remote Northern Territory and Western Australia communities and commercial geothermal projects in Victoria and Syncline's community and environmental work for MREH was recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia in its 2022 awards for excellence and won an Urban Development Institute commendation in 2023. As well as founding Syncline in 2005, Phil has built a group of other energy companies. This includes re-capitalising ASX listed Eromanga Hydrocarbons as Managing Director through its successful exploration phase in Brazil and the US. He was also Portfolio Manager for CVC Sustainable Investments which held wind, battery, hydro and wave energy investments. Phil was an executive at BHP for 10 years up to 2005. This included global roles in Aluminium, Corporate Finance and Gas Development and as a member of the BHP Aluminium Executive Committee for 5 years based in London. As well as operational achievements, his completed transactions include outsourcing BHP’s power operations for $520m to Duke Energy and being part of the team that merged BHP with Billiton, a US$31Bn transaction. Prior to BHP, he was at CS First Boston specialising in energy sector M&A and finance. Upon graduating from engineering, Phil worked in design and construction roles with Rio Tinto in Australia and PNG and in commercial roles with Esso as a gas market analyst.
