About Phil Kavanagh

Phil Kavanagh qualified as an architect after graduating from Oxford Brookes University which included a period of study in Washington USA. An architect since 1993, Phil co-founded KKE Architects in 2005, and is now one of two joint Directors of the practice. With a long-standing commitment to the design of better palliative care environments, Phil has jointly lead, the development of KKE’s innovative approach to hospice design. He has explored ways of making these environments more humane, and challenged the appropriateness of some legislation for the setting, which falls between domestic and healthcare typologies. A testimonial of the practice’s evolution in this sector was the achievement of both an RIBA National Award and the Eisteddfod Welsh Gold Medal for Architecture in 2018 for the second phase of works at St David’s Hospice, Newport, Wales. Not only does Phil Jointly lead KKE’s business management, but he also takes an active role in projects as Director in charge of half of the practice’s live portfolio. He oversaw the award-winning £4.4M new 15-bed inpatient unit at St David’s Hospice, Newport, completed in 2017. Under his wing on site are: the £5M Y Bwthyn Macmillan Specialist Care Unit at The Royal Glamorgan Hospital, providing 8 inpatient beds, day hospice and administration areas; and a new £18M Thames Hospice in Windsor, encompassing 28 ensuite inpatient beds, outpatient services, education facilities, a café hub, and administration accommodation within an 12 acre greenbelt site.
