About Phil Lines

I’m passionate about holistic, multidiscipline design and working with people to get the best out of an integrated team. My dual role at Buro Happold as Bath Office Director and as a Project Director gives me the best of both worlds- leading and inspiring excellent Engineers across in a multi-discipline design environment to get the best out of themselves and bringing that skill, passion and expertise to bear in delivering highly innovative projects for great Clients in conjunction with world-leading design collaborators. I joined Buro Happold in 2003 and have over 30 years’ experience of delivering complex projects, globally and across a wide variety of sectors. Throughout my career I’ve developed a love of inspirational leadership; leading, guiding and coordinating teams to create amazing projects. Working with some of the most talented designers and consultants in the industry, I have a portfolio of projects that I’m immensely proud of, and some very happy memories of the way in which we worked together to deliver them. I’m a Building Services engineer by background, but have always believed that multidiscipline teams are at their best when they become almost “discipline agnostic”, delivering their own area of specialism but always in consideration of what is best for the project, sometimes brining our own skills to the fore and sometimes listening to others to produce something that is innovative, integrated and powerful. Now is the time that the humble Building Services Engineer is right at the forefront of importance in meeting the challenges facing the built environment, the industry and society as a whole, whether that be around the climate emergency, wellness and wellbeing, future resilience, and embracing and embedding new technology as well as those critical aspects we have always prized; building performance, value, safety, buildability. I've moved on from leading building services teams to growing Buro Happold's Sustainability and Physics team from under 50 people to around 120 people in just three years, whilst maintaining incredibly high levels of innovation, engineering delivery and team engagement. As a Director and Leader I believe it is important for me not just to deliver my own projects to these high standards but to act as an inspiring role model to achieve the best that we can for our Clients and for ourselves and to motivate others to do the same with integrity and with diligence. And that’s why I love working with Buro Happold.
