Background
About Philip Carpenter
My largest project involved deploying a nationally redundant Hosted VoIP and SIP trunking platform complete with Call Center, Contact Center, Call Recording, and Unified Communications features. I was responsible for both the logical and physical end-to-end design, which included deploying the system within a DMZ protected by production firewalls and SBCs from the internet, as well as corporate firewalls for added security in case of a breach. The final deployment was fully virtualized using VMware, with no local hard drives, relying entirely on top-of-rack SAN storage. As the project evolved, I increasingly depended on my incredible teammates and lab-mates. My focus shifted to integrating the platform into the company’s operations. Working closely with IT and Product teams, we developed a custom portal that enabled customers to personalize phone buttons, modify features, and more. Additionally, I helped integrate the ordering, billing, ticketing, and other processes with 59 back-office systems. We also had to decide whether to work with a third-party vendor or handle order fulfillment internally. This project greatly deepened my understanding of business processes, workflows, and business case development. I collaborated closely with the Innovation Team on Internet of Things (IoT) projects, often referred to as “Smart X.” My work involved integrating technologies like 5G, LTE access, and IoT protocols such as LoRa, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, BLE, and proprietary solutions. I worked with a range of devices including video cameras, motion sensors, proximity sensors, lights, weather sensors, and OBDII. Additionally, I contributed to projects involving Wi-Fi extenders, Wi-Fi Access Gateways, long-range Wi-Fi, and g.hn over power line, telephone, and coax cables. I had the opportunity to present these solutions to CenturyLink's Technology Advisory Board (TAB) and showcase several at the headquarters’ demo room. I also collaborated with various vendors on Community Wi-Fi projects, enabling users to log in to different access points with their credentials when away from home. My work included enhancing residential gateways and conducting a 300-unit trial for G.hn over power line Wi-Fi extenders. I was involved in numerous proof-of-concept initiatives aimed at advancing new technologies and improving the overall customer experience.
