About Philip Lewis

I have worked at the intersection of international policy, practice and research for more than 15 years working with everyone from the military to NGOs, community leaders to Prime Ministers, and academics to government officials and businesses. I am passionate about the power of research and evidence in achieving transformative change.I have extensive experience of bringing evidence and expertise to bear to help shape policy on a broad range of global challenges, including conflict, climate change, education and urbanisation. I have a strong knowledge of foreign policy and international contexts and I have worked closely with government officials, NGOs, businesses and multilateral organisations. One of my proudest achievements has been to secure the UK's association to Horizon Europe working with colleagues in the sector to marshal evidence in support, build and maintain a coalition of support, and engage with and convince an ever-changing cast of policymakers of its importance.In my current position, I have a leading role in developing and overseeing the British Academy's international strategy. I have been instrumental in designing and delivering a major expansion and diversification of its international portfolio and presence to have links with around 100 countries with a range of new innovative programmes based on equitable partnerships. This has grown the internationally focused-budget from £2.3m to £56m p.a. This year, I am taking forward major new international policy programmes on global (dis)order, just transitions and 'what is a good city?'.
