Background
About Philip Proctor
From the moment I played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on my grandmother's Sega Genius, video games had me captured, and that has evolved into a desire to work within the video game or Esports industry in international relations, project management, or journalism. Since then I have worked tirelessly as a student at the University of North Carolina Greensboro to obtain the experience and skills necessary by coaching and managing a competitive Splatoon team, serving as Gaming Committee Chair during the pandemic, writing for Zelda Universe, working for UNCG’s Esports Arena, and countless other volunteering positions for events around campus. Firstly, I spent two years as the manager and coach of UNCG's Splatoon team. When the team first started there was a total of four members including myself. After a single year, UNCG has two separate teams, with 12 players total. The team I personally coach is won their divisional championship for the fall 2022 season. Beyond this, there is now a thriving community of around 50 students surrounding Splatoon 3. Students participate in the community through the extremely active UNCG Splatoon server on Discord that I manage, or monthly our community events at the Esports Arena surrounding in-game events known as Splatfests. Before my involvement in Splatoon, I sat as the Strong Residential Colleges "Gaming Committee Chair" where I would put on weekly meetings with a variety of games for residents of Strong College both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. During this, the Gaming Committee was the only part of Strong College to see an increase in participation after the pandemic began. Notably, I was awarded for my efforts to keep the community going forward by creatively using gaming to continue to bring people together. Other experience includes; two years as a news and features writer for Zelda Universe where I learned the ins and outs of both video game journalism and the industry in order to write exceptional articles, a part-time job as an Esports Arena Supervisor at UNCG where I helped guest troubleshoot the tech issues around the arena and a volunteering experience as a Game Observer for a Fornite tournament at UNCG's E2 Weekend.
