About Philip van Dam

With a background in computer science I have since 1983 been working within the software industry developing professional business solutions covering a large set of theoretical aspects. While doing my PhD study, two fellow university students and I founded our own company, in which I worked for nearly 20 years before pursuing new challenges, which considerably have enriched my professional know-how. As software architect I strongly focus on utilizing my theoretical background and pragmatic use of best practices taking aspects such as robustness, extensibility, maintainability, scalability, performance, adaptability and upgradability into account. I enjoy taking part in the system design and implementation to ensure that the software not only is working but also well-crafted. In particular, keeping the code base concise, modular and as small as possible, I believe, is a key point to ensure extensibility and maintainability of the code. As software architect my work covers complex challenges such as architectural designs for multi-threaded data collection for capacity management, multi-threaded financial risk calculations, and integrating different Capital Market systems into an existing banking platform. As software developer I have worked with various complex tasks such as compiler design and implementation, design and development of complex frameworks for abstract user interfaces and, design and development of advanced reporting systems involving both effective data management as well as complex layout calculations. As a person I am known for always fighting for the best solution possible, my ever-present curiosity and need to understand, and my dry sense of humour.
