About Philippe Bouillard

Philippe Bouillard holds an MSc in Civil Eng.(ULB, Belgium, 1990), a PhD in Eng.(ULB, 1997) and Habilitus (Paris VI, France, 2004). He began his career as a work manager for major French contractors, before starting an academic career in a teaching and research assistant position at the Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles (ULB). He was promoted to full professor in 2005. Philippe Bouillard has occupied many senior management positions at ULB from Head of Department to Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. During a sabbatical leave, he was Vice-Dean for the School of Engineering at Nazarbayev University (2014-2015). Back at ULB, he was appointed Head of BATir, a comprehensive department in Built Environment. He developed expertise in Quality Assurance and Bologna processes. He has been a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2017. His main research topic was initially computational structural mechanics but he redirected his research interest towards sustainable urban design in 2012 with a focus on infrastructure and mobility. He co-edited 3 books and is co-author of more than 80 refereed journal papers, 6 chapters of books and more than 100 conference proceedings. He supervised several PhD theses (20) and research projects. He received the Belgian National Science Foundation (FNRS) De Waele Award in and the Wernaers Award in 2012 for his effort to scientific dissemination towards a large public. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute for Civil Engineers since 2017. From an educational point of view, Philippe Bouillard is in charge of the modules related to solid and structural mechanics, AEC project management, and infrastructure and mobility. He was deeply involved in the active learning student-centred reforms and he received the ULB Socrates Best Teacher Award (2008).
