Rich of a trans-disciplinary education with a BSc in environmental science, MSc in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Imperial College), further complemented when I was working for Anglian Water by the Diploma in Financial Management (Association of Certified and Chartered Accountants) and the Diploma in Management Studies (Nottingham Trend University), I completed my PhD in water management at Cranfield University. My doctoral thesis investigating which type of participation would be appropriate for which type of water related issue. I consider Integrated Water Resources Management and the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive as complex problem and that a barrier to implementation is the lack of consensual practical interpretation of the objectives and means to define RBP through public participation that is a wicked concept. The data were collected through in-depth interviews, questionnaires and opinion poll. They were analysed under a constructivist paradigm using qualitative and quantitative interpretations. The unknown intensity of climate change on environmental resources (water, food, soil), impacts on human activities, with unexpected consequences on economical, environmental and social systems and at different scales. Given the complexity of the issues at stakes and the diversity of stakeholder’s values and interest a trans-disciplinary education and experience promotes both creativity and rigor necessary to understand such a complex societal problem that is Integrated environmental policy. I am now working at TU Delft, section policy analysis, on the implementation of the water framework directive, with interest in integrated methodology and the interactions between institutions – social actors – the public, at different scales.
