Background
About Phillip Long
I recently began an undergraduate research position at UC San Diego's McAuley lab where I study artificial intelligence - more precisely, I use machine learning to generate music. I recently released the largest-known public domain MusicXML for symbolic music generation, leading to a paper accepted at the 2025 International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (https://arxiv.org/abs/2409.10831). I am now working with LLMs to create fine-grained natural language captions for the aforementioned dataset.I have previously analyzed large genomic datasets with R, Python, and Bash on UCI's high performance computing cluster. My work resulted in a publication in GENETICS May 2022 focused on the use of Peromyscus leucopus, the most significant reservoir for Lyme disease, as a genetic model system (DOI: 10.1093/genetics/iyac026).An alumni of CDM Polo, I continue to swim and play water polo in my free time. I have my own jazz band, the Seven O'Clock Septet (@sevenoclockseptet on Instagram), in which I play the trumpet.
