About Phillip Woods

I am a Business Development Manager at Ingalls Shipbuilding. I apply the lessons learned from my experiences as designer, engineer, program manager and proposal writer/manager to my current role as Capture Manager where I assess opportunities and develop capture strategies for new ship construction programs. I started my career in shipbuilding in 1978 as a Junior Draftsman at Avondale Industries in New Orleans where I learned basic drafting, ship design and manufacturing processes for commercial and military ships. I earned my undergraduate degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of New Orleans in 1991 and came to Ingalls in 1992. As an engineer, I designed hull structures, conducted basic analysis for speed/power, and developed ship arrangements. I also participated in national and international ship design and marketing campaigns which challenged me to learn the business side of shipbuilding and lead to increasingly challenging assignments in Ship Construction and Program Management. I completed rotational assignments in Ingalls DDG 51 Program Office including new construction, configuration management, and post delivery support. These assignments prepared me for the role of Ship Program Manager in charge of detail design and construction of LPD 17 Class Amphibious Assault Ships during various phases of construction (LPD 18, LPD 21 and LPD 26).
