About Phoebe Bates

Phoebe is a Senior Associate in the Energy, Marine and Natural Resources group at Clyde & Co in the firm's London office. She joined the firm in 2020 and worked as an Associate in Sydney before relocating to the United Kingdom in 2022. Prior to joining Clyde & Co, Phoebe was an Associate to the Honourable Angus Morkel Stewart of the Federal Court of Australia. Phoebe specialises in resolving disputes for clients in the energy, marine and international trade sectors. Her practice focuses on advising commodity traders (predominately coal, oil, biofuels and grains) and shipping clients on contentious issues arising out of charterparties, bills of lading, contracts for the sale of goods (both physical and futures) and other commercial agreements. She also frequently assists clients with general commercial disputes, including complex cases involving allegations of fraud and breach of sanctions. Phoebe has litigated in the High Court in London, the Federal Court of Australia and the Supreme Courts of Australia, including the appellate jurisdictions. She has also acted on numerous international arbitrations under LCIA, LMAA, GAFTA and FOSFA Rules. Phoebe holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor of Media (Communications & Journalism). She was admitted to practice in New South Wales, Australia in February 2020.
