About Pierangelo Metrangolo

From 2011 I am Full Professor of Chemistry Fundamentals of Technologies at Politecnico di Milano, where I have been teaching since 2002. With a PhD in Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, I combine rigorous academic training with a passion for innovation in supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology, fields where I am internationally recognized for my pioneering studies on halogen bonding. Since 2011, I have held strategic roles at Polimi’s Department of Chemistry “Giulio Natta”. I also served as Research Associate at CNST@PoliMI (Italian Institute of Technology) and at the Nanotec Institute of the National Research Council (CNR). I am currently an Affiliated Researcher at the Onco Tech Lab of the European Oncology Institute and at the BraiNs Lab within the JRP Polimi C. Besta IRCCS. In 2024, I became an Affiliate Member of the International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted Chiral Meta Matter (WPI SKCM2) at Hiroshima University, Japan. My research bridges fundamental and applied chemistry - spanning molecular recognition, bio nanomaterials, and green chemistry. As an ERC Consolidator grantee (FoldHalo, 2013–2019) and Proof of Concept awardee (MINIRES, 2017), I have published over 285 peer reviewed articles, amassing more than 27 citations (h index 70) and co authoring six international patents. In 2012, I co founded FluorIT S.r.l, a Polimi spin off translating fluorinated materials research into real world applications. I have chaired major national and international symposia such as the National Congress of the Italian Chemical Society in 2024 (2500 partecipants), the 14th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (ISMSC2019)(800 partecipants), and the 21st International Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry (ISFC/ISoFT2015)(600 partecipants). I coordinate interdepartmental and joint research centers - including NEUROTECH with the C. Besta Neurological Institute - serve as Rector’s Delegate for Sport Activities at Politecnico di Milano. Among my recognitions, I received an Honorary Doctorate from Tampere University, Finland, in 2025, the Giorgio Modena Medal (2021) of the Italian Chemical Society, and the Fluorous Technologies Award (2019). I am Past President of IUPAC’s Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division (2024-2025), where I was President in 2022-2023. I continue to shape the future of chemistry through evaluation roles for major funding agencies (ERC, NSF) and as a frequent peer reviewer for top tier journals.
