Background
About Pip Tompkin
Pip Tompkin, Chief Design Officer, ThreeSixty Group Pip was born in Nottingham, England. He graduated top of his year with 1st class honors majoring in Industrial Design from Northumbria University in Newcastle, then attended The Royal College of Art in London and gained a Masters of Industrial Design with a special examiners distinction. Pip has worked with companies in Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, and the United States in the fields of architecture, furniture and product design. From 2001-2005 Pip worked as a consultant to Dell developing products in the gaming, education, consumer, and enterprise markets. From 2005-2008 Pip worked with Nokia developing the first multimedia phones and mobile devices. Pip also served on a board in Helsinki to create strategies for Nokia’s Global portfolio. In 2008 Pip formed Pip Tompkin Design Studio, an industrial design consultancy, in Los Angeles, California. Pip Tompkin’s philosophy of ‘Assume Nothing’, together with his ‘Design for the Unknown’ methodology, has helped develop award winning products, packaging and brands for numerous businesses, start-ups and large corporations around the world including Nokia, Dell, Twitter, HP, Microsoft, Vizio, Toshiba, Polycom, Bird, iRobot, Belkin and Arlo. In addition, the studio spun off its own startup called Mr Pip. Mr Pip’s first products was the highly awarded ‘Double Cross’, a game designed to reengage families and friends lost through digital distractions. Pip exercises consideration and advocates for sustainability in design. One example of this is the collaboration with the Lettuce Grow Team. The Lettuce Grow project is a startup with the ambition to educate and fundamentally change the way we grow and consume food. Through innovation and a complete rethink of the food supply chain, the Lettuce Grow Project developed a solution which can significantly reduce waste, our carbon footprint, diet and health. In 2018, both Pip Tompkin Design Studio and Mr Pip were acquired by the ThreeSixty Group. The ThreeSixty Group is a large brand house located in Irvine California. The company has over 700 employees around the world and owns a number of brands, including FAO Schwarz, Sharper Image and Vornado. Pip’s mission with the ThreeSixty Group is, through strategic design thinking, to create a new future.
