About Prem Midha

My core discipline is in mechanical engineering with a focus in biofluid mechanics. I received my Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2017. My doctoral research focused on prosthetic heart valve fluid mechanics, and in particular, the risk factors and mechanisms behind transcatheter aortic valve thrombosis. This work utilized 4-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT), an in vitro left heart simulator, and novel imaging techniques in order to understand how design and procedural factors influence flow stasis around heart valve prostheses. I have experience in hydrodynamic evaluation and performance optimization of cardiovascular medical devices, flow loop design, medical image processing and segmentation, state-of-the-art flow quantification techniques (standard, stereo, high-speed, and plenoptic particle image velocimetry), high-speed photogrammetry, and MRI compatibility testing. I have designed and worked with steady and pulsatile blood flow loops in the evaluation of thrombogenicity of blood contacting devices. In addition, I have performed design verification testing for several transcatheter heart valve submissions (ISO 5840). I have served as a liaison between device companies and US and EU regulatory bodies, participated in the development of cardiovascular device testing standards, developed and executed custom design verification methods based on existing and relevant standards, performed a wide range of MRI compatibility testing (active and passive devices), and assisted in numerous product liability cases. In addition, I have done substantial work in clinical image processing and analysis, including performing virtual device implantations after microCT scanning contrast perfused cadaveric specimens. While at Abbott, I have worked on the design and development of the Cephea transcatheter mitral valve and its delivery system. My contributions have included design, testing, novel test method development, clinical imaging and data analysis, clinical sizing strategy and methodology, FEA, and management of accelerated wear and hydrodynamic test programs.
