About Preslav Karapchanski

I am a third-year biomedical engineering student, heavily interested in cell and tissue/pharmaceutical work as well as cancer research, searching for a six-month Co-Op opportunity between January 2023 and June 2023. I have two summer's worth of laboratory experience working in a chemical engineering lab under Professor Zhiyong Gu at Umass Lowell where I studied nanoparticles and their application to biomarker and toxic gas sensors as well as electrochemical sensors for heavy metal ions in drinking water. There, I learned how to use laboratory equipment such as fume hoods, micropipettes, centrifuges, sonicators, versastats, and mircroscopes, as well as the skill of handling and discarding of toxic chemicals in a safe manner. Along with learning basic laboratory procedures, I developed skills that are pivotal to research such as troubleshooting, reading literature within the field, and presenting updates/literature reviews through presentations or papers. I am motivated to deepen my understanding and build upon my skills within the biomedical field as I believe there are endless opportunities to better the world in which we live in.
