About Priya Joi

Global health communications expert with 25 years of experience. I've produced communications strategies, written and edited major global health reports, policy briefs, press releases, case studies, evaluation reports for donors, and blogs, columns and op/eds. At the World Health Organization, I provide strategic guidance to technical units in communicating their work both internally and externally to build on the WHO brand, supporting them in donor and partner communications, and communicating their messaging to as wide an audience as possible. Prior to working at WHO, I was a senior consultant, and worked for The Lancet, BMJ, Nature, BBC, Guardian, WHO, UNAIDS, GAVI, MSF, and Stop TB. As a former journalist specialising in developing world issues, I reported from around the world, including Algeria, Borneo, Brazil, China, Cuba, India, and Thailand. To investigate science and technology in emerging economies, I spent 2010 travelling across India, reporting on health and environment issues. Throughout my career, I've worked with a range of stakeholders in development, including universities, governments, NGOs, pharma, and community workers, and have often worked with journalists and media in developing countries, giving me a good insight into the communications approaches necessary in different cultures. In 2012, for instance, I spent several months in Indonesia doing fieldwork for a project for The Royal Society on science in Islamic countries. The research has led to a peer-reviewed report on the state of science and technology in Indonesia, published in 2014. With strong leadership skills, I have mentored and trained junior staff, project-managed several long-term communication strategies, commissioning and editing editorial content and also helping to devise graphics, maps and videos to form cohesive packages. I have an MSc in science communication and a BSc in genetics.
