Background
About Priya Shete
Dr. Shete works at the nexus between health policy, implementation research, and public health programming to address the underlying disparities that exacerbate poor health outcomes for the world’s most vulnerable populations. Her current work focuses on tuberculosis (TB) which is the world's leading cause of mortality from an infectious disease, killing 1.3 million people every year. As Associate Professor-in-Residence of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Shete is the Principal Investigator of research projects across the globe to improve effectiveness of TB tools and treatments by crafting implementation strategies that target underlying social and structural disparities of TB. Her research program has been funded by CDC, NIH, WHO, and international donors. Her multidisciplinary team uses methods in implementation science, epidemiology, and health economics, and health policy to design, implement, and evaluate strategies that address social, economic, and structural determinants of disease which contribute to ongoing gaps care for TB affected individuals and which perpetuate the ongoing epidemic. By mitigating barriers to care for communities affected and reducing health system inefficiencies in implementation, Dr. Shete hopes we can employ smarter, simpler, and sustainable approaches to eliminating TB. Dr. Shete is the Director of the UCSF Implementation Science Training Program as well as Clinical and Population Health Research for the UCSF Center for TB. In 2020, Dr. Shete was asked to join the California COVID-19 Response as Lead for Modeling and Analytics. In this capacity, she leads a team of scientists and epidemiologists to analyze and synthesize COVID-19 data for direct use in policy making and public health action. Notable achievements in this work include developing the nation’s first health equity metric for COVID-19 control and launching the nation’s first open source COVID-19 modeling ensemble, CalCAT. She is now the Prinicipal for CPR3, an academic-community-public health think-tank at the University of California aimed at enhancing evidence-informed public health policy. Prior to joining the faculty at UCSF, Dr. Shete served as Consultant to the World Health Organization and a Public Health Advisor for USAID, Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, leveraging her experience in program implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and health system strengthening. Dr. Shete maintains an active clinical practice, caring for patients with pulmonary disease at San Francisco General Hospital.
