About Prudence Murphy

Prudence Murphy is an Australian artist, and Senior Project Officer (Research Operations) at the University of Sydney. She completed her undergraduate studies at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales (COFA) where she was awarded Honours Class 1 and has a Master of Fine Arts (Research) from UNSW Art & Design (2002). Murphy’s practice examines the details of our quotidian existence: interrogating and contextualizing fleeting moments of our ritual and play. Murphy has exhibited widely in Australia and was selected to exhibit in the Ulsan International Photography Festival in South Korea. She has been shortlisted for numerous awards including the Art and Australia Contemporary Art Award, Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, Bowness Photography Prize, Olive Cotton Award and the 37th Alice Art Prize. Murphy is represented in national and international collections, including major public collections, and private collections in Australia, Europe and the United States. Murphy’s recent publication, Detective Special was launched in Los Angeles at the Independent Art Book Fair and received the Best Book Award at the Mohawk Awards. Her book is available at major galleries across Australia, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), National Gallery of Victoria,(NGV) and the National Gallery of Australia (NGA). Murphy has lectured in photography and visual art at UNSW Art & Design, in the Faculty of Design at the University of Technology, Sydney and in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sydney. She is currently working as Senior Project Officer (Research Operations) coordinating the research initiatives for the University of Sydney Business School.
