Background
About Quinton Dlima
If you told six-year-old me that I was a writer I would probably have asked "Wait, that's a job?" This never came from a place of malice, as a child I just thought one person wrote all the fantasy books, and another one wrote all the history books, and so on. When I did eventually find out that wasn't how books were made at all, I think the world started to make a lot more sense.Flash forward more than a few years and here I am. I've always loved books, and now I get to love them even more. When I first started university I had to force myself into a major I didn't like because "how will I get a job?" Then of course a pandemic hit and I was stuck doing a major I hated in an even worse situation than before. I figured "Well if I'm miserable at the moment I may as well be miserable doing something I'm actually interested in."So I switched to a Creative Writing, and a Professional Writing and Publishing major. I don't think I've ever felt as much relief as I did in that moment. Books have always felt like coming home, except home is in a magic world filled with dragons, or a spaceship plotting a course to distant stars. The change to my degree also surprised me with another joy in editing. Not only did I now get to actually write, but I was also learning more about the tiny little details that go into this ink machine. If someone told high school me that I would enjoy editing, or finding out what a misplaced modifier is, I think I would have actually combusted on the spot. One day I hope to publish my own book and have it be even one person's special place. Everyone has that book that they read when they were a child. You know the one. It could have been The Lord of the Rings for one person, or Harry Potter for another. It doesn't matter what book, all that matters is how it made you feel. For me it was Emily Rodda's Deltora Quest. But for now I'm more than happy to help other people. Whether that may be by finding the broken cogs in their machine, or by enhancing the mechanisms the best way I know how, through writing.
