Background

About Rafael Ricaurte

In my 10 years as a high school mathematics teacher, I continue to learn to understand the intricacies of educating groups of up to 30 students who represent a diverse range of mathematical skills, learning styles, English-language abilities, and individualized needs. By building relationships with my students and being attentive to their developmental processes, I continuously endeavor to develop effective practices that accommodate diverse student needs. As an educator, I believe that my growth occurs in parallel with student success. I encourage and aid my students in learning mathematics through discussion, discovery, and practice, while exploring new teaching techniques and practices that benefit their learning. I routinely use manipulatives during lessons, group-discussions, projects, and class-wide brainstorming, as successful learning tools. My fluency in Spanish, working knowledge of French, and introductory-level knowledge of several other languages have allowed me to make mathematical content more accessible through linguistic and historical connections. These varied approaches have led to success in my students and to increased enjoyment of being a math teacher.
