Background
About Ramin Roshandel
My composition work is based around incorporating ‘experience’ as a fundamental concept although through a non-experimental approach in performance. Considering phenomena such as instability, cultural identity, and communicational language on one hand, and being inspired by Persian music as a setar player on the other, lead me to consider indeterminate, improvisatory, and abstract structures in my music in contrast, or alongside post- or non-tonal organizations.I received my PhD in Music Composition from at the University of Iowa. Published in 2022, I was the setar player of the album, Jamshid Jam (setar and live-electronics), which was collaborated with Jean-François Charles. Jamshid Jam was nominated in the Crossover Productions and World Music categories for Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics’ Award) and won a Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Global Music Awards. I am currently working on an album for solo setar as well as a compilation of my compositions throughout my PhD at Iowa.I have two peer-reviewed published papers on Hossein Alizadeh’s Neynavâ and Elliott Carter’s Dialogues.Feel free to contact me at ramin.roshandel@gmail.com
