About Ranjna Mehta-Dutt

Enrolled with Bar in 1992, my experience in IP is close to three decades. I lead the Life Sciences practice of the Firm and has extensive experience in rendering patentability opinions, carrying out and analysing patent searches including freedom to operate searches, drafting patent specifications, filing national and international applications, handling patent applications in diverse fields of technology, conducting patent oppositions and handling issues of enforcement. Well versed in the intricacies of patent law and skilled at formulating strategy for developing and managing patent portfolios. My experience is particularly pronounced in pharmaceutical, biotech and chemical patents, with a special focus on appeals and contentious matters. Have handled many high profile matters before various forums including the Indian Patent Office and the erstwhile Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB). That apart, I have significant experience in filing and prosecuting design applications as well as handling the cancellation of designs. My experience also extends to the protection of plant varieties and obtaining necessary approvals from the National Biodiversity Authority. I regularly participate in various IP initiatives – deliver lectures on IP law at domestic and international fora; adjudge moot court competitions and assist the government on policy development and related issues. Have also written several pieces for renowned IP publications and comments frequently on topical developments. Currently, I hold the position of President, Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA)-Indian Group. I was a member of the APAA International Designs Committee and is currently a member of the APAA International Patents Committee. I also have the honour of being a member of the APAA International Council. Have been voted as a leading IPR attorney by renowned IP publications.
