Background
About Raph L. Hamers
I am a physician trained in internal medicine, infectious diseases, clinical immunology and epidemiology. I serve as the Interim Director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) Indonesia. I hold an Associate Professorship at University of Oxford and an Adjunct Professorship at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia. I am also a Honorary Consultant in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Amsterdam University Medical Centres. Alongside my leadership role, I am the Head of OUCRU Indonesia’s Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Programme. This dual role allows me to continue my research while contributing to the strategic direction of the organization. Since 2017, I have spearheaded the creation of the Universities of Indonesia-Oxford Clinical Research Laboratory (IOCRL), as part of OUCRU Indonesia. This dynamic research hub in central Jakarta integrates a clinical trials unit, research laboratories, and a public and community engagement team, driving forward our comprehensive and expanding collaborative research agenda through local and international partnerships. My research work, from prevention, diagnosis and management of HIV and STIs, tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, to (re)emerging pathogens, is informed by my clinical experiences in the hospital treating patients, as well as the most pressing public health challenges in the SEA region. By combining clinical trials, implementation science, laboratory research and social sciences, the goal of my research programme is to translate new insights into better care, vaccines, treatments, and how these are delivered to patients who need them, in order to improve health outcomes in and outside of Indonesia.
