About Ray Laurence

Professor of Ancient History at Macquarie University. I have a passion for making my research available to the public, whether by working with museums, poets, educators and school students, or animators. I see the study of Roman history as having continuing relevance in the 21st century and can contribute to understanding the human the experience. Below are animated films based on my work and some TV work, as well as a video about an MA degree programme that I set up in Rome. I'd really like to collaborate with animators in Sydney to make more films about the Roman past and am hoping to see opportunities emerge in the coming years. Academic expertise in the following: Roman History - Human Ageing and the Life Span, Roman Archaeology - Pompeii and Rome, Roman Italy, Roman Roads and Communications, and Shopping in the Ancient World, as well as Heritage and Museums. I have experience of management in Higher Education (herding cats) as Head of a Department in a UK (Kent) and an Australian University (Macquarie), as well as Director of Research and Enterprise for a Faculty of Humanities (Kent). Currently, I am Discipline Chair of Ancient History at Macquarie University. The Wallumattagal Campus of Macquarie University lies on the unceded land of the Dharug nation. I acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land the Wallumattagal clan of the Dharug nation, whose cultures and customs have nurtured this land and place of learning, since the Dreamtime, and pay respect to Elders, past, present and emerging.
