About Ray Merrill

Dr. Merrill is an internationally recognized environmental chemist with more than 45 years of experience managing and performing environmental measurements, methods development, method evaluation, and quality control/quality assurance programs. Dr. Merrill worked for EPA’s Office of Research and Development from 1976 to 1987. In 1987 he joined Radian Corporation’s staff to lead measurement development and evaluation efforts on contract to EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards and EPA’s Office of Research and Development. Dr. Merrill moved to Eastern Research Group in where he managed major field sampling and methods development contracts for source and ambient air programs for government sector clients. Since 2010, Dr. Merrill has been with EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards in the Emissions Measurement Center-Measurement Technology Group. Ray is EPA’s primary author for Methods 201A/202 for fine and condensable particulate, Method 325A/B for passive fenceline VOC, Performance Specifications 18 for HCl continuous monitoring, and OTM 45 for PFAS measurements from stationary sources. When he’s not mentoring and giving back to the environmental community you will often find him racing his one design sailboat in and around North Carolina Lakes and rivers.
