About Ray Patterson

I started in engineering in 1989 after joining the Royal Navy. I completed my electrical and mechanical engineering certificates in the early 1990's and left the Navy for an oil and gas career in 1996. Started with Schlumberger in Aberdeen running downhole quartz gauges. I spent 6 years working as a service technician on multiple types of installations including Semi-submersible, Drilling Rigs, Oil & Gas and Platforms and various boats. I changed direction by moving into Subsea engineering 7 years with Transocean as assistant subsea supervisor. I headed back into the service industry with Aker Kvaerner Angola as offshore supervisor. Then finally FMC Technologies in Ivory Coast as shift leader. FMC gave me many opportunities in both design and implementation of new tooling and machinery and helping to implement standardization at each location I've been involved in. I travelled globally for over 20 years then moved to Orkney to be involved in renewable energy. I left oil industry in 2015 when oil price crashed industry and moved into the hospitality sector as a chef and became head chef at Orkney brewery. I now work in renewable energy with wind turbines as materials coordinator and I’m loving it. This work has taken me to live up on the gorgeous Orkney islands. Plenty of wind up here…
