About Raya Kanama

I am a renewable energy and sustainable development specialist with a strong background in engineering, entrepreneurship, and development studies. With extensive experience leading renewable energy initiatives, particularly in post-conflict regions, I focus on integrating solar solutions into agricultural and educational sectors. As the Co-Founder and Technical Manager of MAHARAT-MENA, I develop community-based energy models to enhance accessibility in underserved areas while fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in the renewable energy sector. My entrepreneurial journey includes founding and managing projects that bridge the gap between technical solutions and sustainable business models, empowering local communities to participate in the green economy. My research, as part of my Ph.D. in Development Studies at the University of Lisbon, focuses on community-based renewable energy frameworks for sustainable development in Cape Verde. I also hold a Master’s in Management of Development from Turin University, where my thesis explored floating solar systems, and a Bachelor's in Industrial Automation Engineering. Additionally, I completed a specialized program in Entrepreneurship & Leadership at the European School of Economics in Milan, refining my ability to drive impact-driven businesses and innovative solutions. Beyond research, I actively work on integrating renewable energy into national development strategies and supporting startups and social enterprises in the green energy sector. My work emphasizes the role of social entrepreneurship in addressing climate challenges, fostering sustainable development, and creating economic opportunities through renewable energy innovations. I am passionate about leveraging entrepreneurship to build resilient, climate-conscious communities and shaping policies that promote sustainable energy solutions globally.
