About Rehnuma Karim

In 2016, I ventured into starting a Non Profit -"Heroes for All" with an aim to help the children and youth become aware of their true potential to live a life of purpose. We are now officially registered in USA under the 501(c)3 tax-exempt status and also in Bangladesh under Social Welfare act. For the first time in Bangladesh, we successfully organized a 4 days sports educational camp -Camp Abilities Bangladesh- which became a local chapter of Camp Abilities USA under HFA. Also, I led knowledge sessions at different educational institutions, corporate sectors and embassies. We also organized the first of its kind community event in Bangladesh to revive neighborhoods. The event was titled “ Paara Uthshob “ which was inaugurated by the Honorable Mayor of Dhaka City North and His Excellency the Ambassador of USA in Bangladesh in December, 2019. I will be launching a school for underprivileged children next year in Bangladesh that will follow a human curriculum. It was a privilege to be invited to speak at various organizations and universities to share my experience that stemmed up from practicing and learning about positive mindset, emotional intelligence, discovering elements of success, awareness of self etc. I am also in the process to complete my documentary," Becoming Me" based on the lives of the acid attacked survivors. I earned my Ph.D. from Penn State University from the school of Health and Human Development. The title of my dissertation was “Learning to Live: A Qualitative Inquiry on the Female Victims of Acid Attack in Bangladesh”. I hold a B.Sc degree in Economics from North South University in Bangladesh. After my graduation I worked at UNICEF Bangladesh and actively involved in the planning and implementation of UNICEF Bangladesh's first National Youth Forum in Afterwards, I pursued my Master’s Degree from Wageningen University, Netherlands. I had been working with State University of New York till 2016 as an Assistant Professor at the School of Health and Human Performance and also been the Departmental Academic Assessment Coordinator. At present, I am teaching at the College of Brockport as an Adjunct Faculty so that I can give more time to my Non- profit. My research interests focus on cross-cultural studies emphasizing on coping strategies, youth-at-risk, diversity in higher education, Leadership and civic engagement, gender issues. I am working with Motivational Speaker and author Coach Jim Johnson on our collaborative book project on “ Leadership “.
