A good plan can make or break a project or an idea, and time must be taken to think about all the different paths you could take to reach your goal. Communication is an important aspect of planning. Not just communication with the person that gives the assignment but also the people that are going to use it. After experiencing, first hand, the differences in thinking and handling between a companies' management and the people that will have to work with the application, communication is key. A programmer who has contact with end-users on a work floor will deliver an application that will increase productivity more than someone who blindly follows management. This way of logical thinking allows for a detailed documentation that covers all the needs of both the company's management and the end users. Having detailed documentation will lead to a quick and accurate development of an application, and will make sure the client will have their application ready and working when they expect it. Lastly I find it important to never blindly copy from others. It is important to be inventive and original, it will keep programming interesting and challenging. A customer that receives something specially made for them will be more satisfied then a customer that gets another application rolled off of an assembly line.
