About Renee Crain

Providing strategic leadership and problem solving that enables people and organizations to thrive. Ms. Crain leads integrative projects, serves as a technical representative on large government contracts, and oversees the program budget for the National Science Foundation's Arctic Research Support and Logistics (RSL) program. The RSL program supports field expeditions, research stations, aircraft, icebreakers, and other services to enable NSF-funded awardees to conduct cutting-edge research in the Arctic. Since joining NSF in 2002, Ms. Crain has expanded partnerships with other U.S. agencies and international organizations to benefit research. Building on her background in outdoor leadership, Ms. Crain completed a two-year leadership development program at NSF, the month-long Leadership for a Democratic Society program, and holds an Executive Certificate in Public Policy from Harvard University. Ms. Crain served details to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as the Acting Director of the Arctic Research Program, and at NSF as acting Section Head for Polar Environment Safety and Health and for the Arctic Sciences Section. She holds M.S. and B.A. degrees in biology and started in arctic research studying physiological and behavioral adaptations in arctic birds. Ms. Crain is committed to advancing research, mentoring people, and informed decision-making.
