Background
About Rian Burger
Airports are such dynamically complex systems that continually challenge the understanding and creativity of those that design them; and they are central to the journeys of people. This and the creative people that share this passion is what inspires me. I am a mature airports architect, planner, programmer and thought leader with a focus on design innovation and sustainability. He leads Stantec’s Toronto-based multi-disciplinary airports design practice encompassing everything from planning to detailing, foundations to tower cabs, access roads to runways. Since 2005, I have advised on, and designed facilities for a diverse range of airport operators and stakeholders, in Canada, the USA and internationally. My project experience includes new terminal buildings at Kaohsiung, Santiago, Larnaka and Pafos International Airports. He led and/or designed major terminal expansions at Denver, Toronto Pearson, and Edmonton International Airports, and extensive interior enhancement projects at Toronto Pearson and Vancouver International Airports. I have several CBSA and USCBP facilities to my name. Over the years, I have helped design and implement innovative new processes for aviation security, and self-service touchpoints at every step of the passenger journey, including notional borders. Two of my clients have successive awards as the the best midsize airport in North America (YVR, from Skytrax) and best airport in North America for air service quality (YYZ, from ACI). I like to think that the contributions of my teams contributed to their successes in some ways. I often publish articles on airport planning and design in industry magazines and scholarly journals, and am invited to speak at conferences on Airport Design and Sustainability. I am currently looking for opportunities to share what I have learned with students of the craft.
