Background
About Richard Apperley
I have over 30 years of experience in both the UK and New Zealand that traverses a very wide spectrum of projects and roles, through investigation, design and construction delivery. My extensive experience includes ground engineering, general civil works and transport infrastructure that incorporates geotechnical, earthworks and foundations, rail, roading, bridging, tunnelling, marine and civil works. My strong technical background coupled with diverse industry experience enables me to provide an integrated holistic understanding of complex infrastructure issues. This deep understanding aids in problem solving, risk mitigation, cost control and effective management / coordination of complex and challenging multi-disciplinary projects. I am a team player and strongly believe that the best results can only be achieved by working with common purpose. I pride himself on my ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all parties to achieve the best project outcomes. I offer strong, inclusive and supportive leadership to my team which has been borne out by very low rates of team attrition and outstanding outcomes on some especially challenging projects. I have demonstrated a willingness to bring in new technologies and methods – some of which have subsequently received broader industry recognition and are briefly described below. In the ground engineering space, the use of geophysics for investigation and the early understanding of the issues associated with site subsoil class indeterminacy in large parts of Wellington led my team to develop new site assessment procedures. The shortcomings of Wellington’s geological and regional seismic hazard models have been acknowledged and we have developed in-house methods to undertake Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessments for sites.
