About Richard Ashby

I was born and bred in Waipu, a delightful country town about 30 minutes south of Whangarei. I left school at the age of 16 intending to study my accounting degree full-time at Northland Polytechnic, but instead I accepted a position with the IRD in Whangarei. Four years later I transferred to the Henderson office and remained there for another three and a half years before deciding it was time to change sides, and perhaps there were indeed greener pastures on the other side of the fence. So I accepted an accounting position with a small CA firm, where I worked for 18 months before deciding that I wanted more of a challenge, which brought me through the doors of Gilligan Sheppard, where I have remained ever since. Having spent the majority of my time at the IRD in the investigations unit, my passion for tax stuck and I eventually became Gilligan Sheppard’s tax partner. I have had over 31 years experience with NZ taxation, and particularly enjoy dealing with land tax issues and the GST regime. I deal with clients of all types and sizes and provide tax opinions on the application of NZ tax legislation to client scenarios, I assist clients with IRD risk reviews and audits and I can assist clients who are having difficulties meeting their tax payment obligations to make suitable repayment arrangements with the IRD. I also do a fair amount of cross-border tax work, providing tax and structuring advice either to clients looking to expand their activities offshore or to non-residents entering the NZ jurisdiction. More recently I have commenced providing an advisory service to predominantly Auckland based accountancy practices, who either may not have their own internal tax resource, or they do but are just looking for a second opinion.
