About Richard Bell

Rich is a partner in the Litigation Group at Blakes and is Co-chair of the Construction Dispute Resolution Group. He earned his law degree from the University of Toronto as well as graduate and undergraduate degrees from the University of Oxford (where he was a Commonwealth Scholar) and the University of Saskatchewan. He served as law clerk to the Honourable Madam Justice C. D. Hunt of the Alberta Court of Appeal. Rich has appeared before all levels of courts in Alberta, as well as the Federal Court of Canada and the Tax Court of Canada. He practices in the areas of construction, oil & gas, product liability, insurance and general commercial litigation. His work in the area of construction dispute resolution has involved defending various cost overrun, delay, warranty and alleged defect and default claims on major projects in Alberta, as well as prosecuting surety bond claims and pursuing and defending builders’ lien actions. Rich has been recognized in The 2020 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in the categories of Construction Law and Corporate Commercial Litigation and in The Best Lawyers in Canada® for Corporate and Commercial Litigation (2011-2021), Product Liability (2013-2021) and Construction Law (2020-2021).
