About Richard Greer

I grew up in a house filled with beautiful music and learned to love music from a very early age. I had the privilege of studying with fine piano teachers in Southern California. In my teens, I was especially privileged to study organ with world-renowned organist and composer Richard Purvis. I became organist of my church at 14 and have served for many years.Before college, a professional musician dissuaded me from a career in music, citing the difficulty in providing for a family. As a result, I chose a technical field, though my heart was not in it. However, I would moonlight as a piano teacher. After many years and layoffs in the software field, I sought to teach music full time. I received a teaching credential and taught in public schools. I worked with thousands of kids from kindergarten to high school and learned their likes and dislikes. I enjoyed putting on large performances, each with a group of about 100 kids. The performances were a highlight of the year for many kids and their families.Growing pains in our school, along with other factors, caused me to change direction again, but not leaving music or teaching. This included writing music lesson plans that, to my surprise, have been purchased from all over the world. When COVID-19 became an issue, I helped teachers by writing online lessons. I also prepared to teach piano online.I then heard of a fascinating methodology in which students learn their songs at their lessons and progress through their books at an accelerated pace. It solves the “practice problem” that so many kids have with traditional lessons. After hearing the many success stories, I learned this methodology and incorporated it into my new piano studio.
