About Richard Hutton

Richard Hutton is an independent consultant/producer. CECE is the reincarnation of UCSB's OCTOS (Outreach Center for Teaching of Ocean Sciences); Hutton oversaw the reframing of OCTOS' vision and the redesign of its building in 2014-15. From 2010-2014, Hutton was Executive Director of UCSB's Carsey-Wolf Center and Adjunct Professor of Film and Media Studies. He oversaw the Center's consolidation and growth and taught courses in storytelling and documentary filmmaking in the Film and Media Studies Department and the Bren School for Environmental Science and Management. From 2001-2010 Hutton ran Seattle-based Vulcan Productions and directed Vulcan Inc.'s media development projects, including initiatives in the education, museum, and entertainment sectors. Under Hutton's direction, Vulcan Productions co-produced: Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial; the four-part series Strange Days on Planet Earth; the Emmy Award-winning six-part series Rx for Survival; the Peabody and Grammy Award-winning No Direction Home: Bob Dylan; and the Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues. Hutton also executive-produced the acclaimed PBS series, Evolution; the Peabody Award-winning Black Sky: The Race for Space; and the blues concert film Lightning in a Bottle. Feature films included Where God Left His Shoes, Hard Candy, and Far From Heaven. Prior to Vulcan, Hutton was Senior Vice President of Creative Development at Walt Disney Imagineering, and served as Vice President, overseeing the Disney Institute. Earlier, Hutton was SVP of programming and production for WETA Television in Washington, D.C. Still earlier, at WNET in New York, his projects included the award-winning The Brain and The Mind. Hutton has authored or co-authored nine books and texts, as well as articles for publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Omni, and Cosmopolitan.
