About Richard Speed

I combine a background in science and technology with industry management and leadership. I am able to explain complex topics in a simple and understandable manner thanks to decades of experience in both leading and working within teams and creating clear, concise and easy to understand documentation. I currently write for ITPro and am particularly interested in database technologies. I have also covered a wide variety of other topics, including cloud engineering, science and aeronautics. I have written for The Register and LeadDev.com and contributed pieces for technology companies. In 2022 I attended the launch of NASA's Artemis I, and spoke with the engineers and scientists involved. I have also visited ESA's Darmstadt operations centre, ESOC, as well as the Toulouse satellite manufacturing facility of Airbus. In the UK, I have visited the Dundee Satellite Station and spoken with Orbex and Skyrora, both of whom have plans for vertical launches from UK soil. From a technology standpoint, I regularly attend conferences such as Kubecon in order to remain current. I also keep abreast of developments in the field of clinical trials and medical research and am as happy parsing a research paper as I am reviewing a new piece of hardware or service. I am also a regular contributor to the long-running Digital Lifestyle podcast where I discuss consumer and smart home technology with my co-hosts.
