About Richard Spry

Light defines our experience of the spaces around us. It is the means by which form, surface, texture and color are transmitted to our seeing consciousness. Light is also the means by which we successfully complete our tasks and negotiate our paths. It may arouse us, or set us to rest. It may encourage and enhance social interaction, or enforce privacy. How we manipulate this medium is of vital significance to the built environment. Lighting manufacturers furnish us with a vast array of tools with which to achieve the lit environments we desire, and considerable experience and expertise are necessary in making the right selections, or in pushing for new product development. As well as founding Studio Lumen in 2003, Richard has led lighting design teams for engineering and contracting enterprises as well as lighting design firms in Europe and the United States, and consequently brings a wealth of design and constructibility experience and expertise to his projects. His work includes hotels and resorts, casinos, museums, restaurants, retail, education, healthcare and corporate offices. An internationally recognized designer, Richard's projects can be seen throughout North America and the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Instilled with a sensitivity to the environment and energy use in particular, while specializing in the demands of architectural lighting for mood and ambience as much as function and amenity, Richard is keen to demonstrate that it is indeed possible to bring finesse and artistry to a project at the same time as acting responsibly with regard to the environment, promoting the health and well-being of those using the space, and all the time serving the Client and their budget.
