About Richard Stapleton

Richard Stapleton is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in the mental health counseling field. He is an Approved Clinical Supervisor, a National Certified Counselor, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a Board Certified Telemental Health provider. Stapleton received his EdD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University in 2012. He also holds an MA in Community Counseling from the University of Phoenix and a BA in Religion from Wartburg College. Stapleton has held various positions in academia, including as a Core Faculty and Contributing Faculty at Walden University, where he is presently employed as a Student Development Coordinator in the School of Counseling. He has also served as an Adjunct Faculty at Argosy University and the University of Phoenix. Stapleton is a seasoned therapist, having worked with clients in a variety of settings. He has worked as a Therapist at MDLive and Optimae Behavioral Health, where he also served as a BHIS Supervisor. He also has experience as a Behavioral Health Clinical Team Lead at ChildServe and as a Team & Treatment Coordinator at Excelsior Youth Center. Stapleton has contributed to the counseling field through his publications and presentations. He has published an article in the Journal of Therapeutic Schools and Programs and has presented at conferences such as the South Dakota Counseling Association Conference and the ACA of Iowa Symposium. Stapleton is also heavily involved in service work. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Board of Certified Counselors. He has also served on various committees, including as the Chairperson for the Technology Committee at NBCC and as a Committee Member for the Ethics Committee at NBCC. He served as a founding board member of the American Counseling Association of Iowa and was President of ACA of Iowa from July 2019 – July 2020. He also serves on the Johnson County Iowa Case Management Advisory Board. Stapleton is a member of various professional organizations, including the Iowa Mental Health Counselors Association, the American Counseling Association of Iowa, and Counselors for Social Justice.
