About Richard Starks

I was born in England and grew up there (in the Roman city of Bath); in Washington, DC; and in Scotland, where I graduated with a couple of degrees in science. I then emigrated to Canada to work as an (award-winning) business and financial journalist, before returning to the UK to run a small publishing company I started with fellow writer Miriam Murcutt. After selling the business, we moved to the US (Boulder, Colorado) where we now work as full-time authors of fiction and narrative non-fiction books. Research for these books has taken us across the Tibetan plateau, through the Amazon jungle, north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland, and through Spain where we stayed only in ancient monasteries. It has also allowed us to explore the canyons, buttes and mesas of Utah, and to watch old Hollywood movies - all part of the research for our latest novel, In A Town Called Paradox, which is set in Utah during the 1950s when Hollywood arrived to film its blockbuster movies. In A Town Called Paradox has been named an ‘Indie Book We Love’ by LoveReading, a leading book-recommendation website, and nominated as Book of the Month by Discovering Diamonds, an independent book-review website. It has also been endorsed by the Indie Author Project, a group that includes Library Journal; and it has been featured on KGNU, in Utah Life magazine, Boulder Magazine and Upside of 50.
