Presently working part time as a Principal Research Scientist at Georgia Institute of Technology while maintaining an active consulting practice. Richard is one of the leading experts in the field of antimicrobials for medical use, and is a polymer chemist/engineer with expertise in the development of hydrophilic and other medical device coatings. He has over 30 years’ experience in polymer-based new product development for the medical industry, and has assisted numerous companies in the development of innovative new products, including assessment of the options and strategies for preventing bloodstream infections with vascular catheters and the analysis of technology for reducing the encrustation of ureteral stents. He remains active in development of anti-infective coatings for catheters and other medical devices and has his own proprietary antimicrobial coatings. As a polymer materials expert, Richard has helped companies develop numerous new products in diverse fields, including veterinary medicine and orthodontics. He has developed a new, patent-pending hydrogel material for use in ultrasound and lithotripsy, conducted product failure and performance analyses, and consulted on regulatory strategies and submissions. As an inventor, Richard has helped write, file and defend over 20 US patents, and has worked on new patent applications for several clients.
