Background
About Richard Walker
From growing up in Canby to working in Salem-Keizer, I’ve spent nearly my entire life in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. At a young age, I discovered a knack for construction and had the unique opportunity to help build homes through my high school’s program. That early hands-on experience, paired with a passion for problem-solving, led me to pursue civil engineering at the Portland State University. While still in school, I began my career at a small civil engineering firm in Gladstone, then spent some time pursuing geotechnical work. That chapter led to valuable field experience and a deeper understanding of how different disciplines work together on complex projects. Eventually, I found my place at AKS, where I’ve now been for over a decade. Civil engineering may not always get the spotlight, but there’s real satisfaction in seeing tangible results. Whether it's a roadway, a subdivision, or a utility project, I take pride in driving around and seeing the difference we make in our communities. From creating safer and more accessible pedestrian facilities to conveying clean drinking water, I don’t need the recognition; I just appreciate knowing we’ve made a lasting impact. No two days in my work are the same. I collaborate with a wide range of talented professionals, all at different stages in their careers, on a variety of unique projects. We work hard and play hard, and that fast-paced, synergistic environment keeps the job exciting and rewarding. My advice to those entering the AEC industry? Character matters just as much as technical skill. Warren Buffett, Chairperson of Berkshire Hathaway, says he looks for three traits in people: integrity, intelligence, and energy. You can always learn the technical side of the job, but those three qualities come from within. Also, don’t underestimate the value of understanding the business side of things. Skills like communication, management, financial literacy, and work ethic are what will truly set you apart. Whether you're just getting started or looking to talk projects, I’m always happy to connect with others in the industry.
