About Rick Bickerstaff

Classically trained on the viola and later picking up the guitar after my uncle gave me an awful-sounding (but very radical) Flying V, I wrote my first song in high school about spotting a girl I liked holding hands with another boy at the county fair, and haven’t stopped pouring my heart out since. After playing in several bands, learning a half-dozen more instruments and writing music for films, I felt compelled to launch a solo project, Yonder Breaks. During that time, I became a Stay-at-home Dad, which changed so much of what I sought after in a career, as well as provided inspiration for a new realm of songwriting; family, fatherhood, societal roles, cultural commentary and faith becoming the topic of many of my songs. I believe mine is a unique perspective, and one I have come to have believe in, fueled by the response I continue to receive from the music and its message. Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, I am heavily influenced by the folk, bluegrass and country/western my grandfather taught me to love; though living in Los Angeles with a deep appreciation for surfing and the coast, I am also inspired by beach music and anything that can capture the emotion that it does. As a result, I strive to combine the two into a unique, percussive, honest sound that is uplifting and relatable for many.
