About Rick Eckdahl

The majority of my 13 years in the oil and gas industry centered on completing tight rock and shale wells. My first 5 years as an engineer focused mainly on hydraulic fracturing using a wide range of multistage stimulation techniques for horizontal wells. During this time, I became very knowledgeable about the operational details of hydraulic fracturing and coiled tubing intervention equipment / procedures, as a service company field representative. Then I moved to a producer where I gained considerable experience in the planning and supervision of horizontal unconventional completions. Through this experience I gained significant competence in the technical and financial aspects of constructing wells for unconventional resource extraction. I have considerable experience planning and performing intervention operations. Prior to university I worked on a service rig and gained an appreciation for the operational capabilities of work over rigs. In my 5 years with a service company, I regularly worked as a field engineer where I became very competent in planning operations around the technical limitations of coiled tubing equipment and strings. As a completion engineer I have planned and supervised a wide range of intervention operations, using snubbing units, coiled tubing, e-line, slick-line, braided line, and work over rigs. I am capable of planning safe, reliable, and economical completion and work over operations. I understand the details that need to be considered when assessing commercial proposals for major services, and what clarifications must be established to ensure hidden costs do not present themselves after the work has been completed. I enjoy continuing to expand my knowledge base in the ever changing unconventional oil and gas industry, as well as mentoring younger engineers in what I have learned to date. Overall, I consider myself to have a well rounded competence in all aspects of onshore, tight rock / shale completions.
