About Rick Freeman

Like many, my passion for music was first cultivated through my love of performing, classical and composing, and a jazz improviser. However, I always wanted to be a teacher and I’ve found that my experience as a performer & composer has given me a high level of practical knowledge, and generated a lot of credibility for me as a teacher in the classroom. I am able to create a safe and enthusiastic environment for my students to develop their artistic talents and succeed in achieving an exceptional level of musical performance. I have 25+ years’ experience as a teacher, accompanist, performer, and director of music in Australia and China. I’ve been fortunate to study piano, clarinet, orchestration, harmony and counterpoint and music pedagogy et alia at tertiary levels. My students of piano, clarinet and saxophone have achieved outstanding results including VCE Seasons of Excellence. 2 piano students won the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship, I've directed senior stage bands that secured 4 first place wins at the National Mount Gambier Competitions, and wins at Royal South Street A Grade section with Stage Bands and Concert Bands in addition to several State Competition successes. I taught the complete rhythm section of a stage band which James Morrison chose for the Generations in Jazz Super Band Division 1, and achieved some of the highest VCE results in the state. I've conducted school and community orchestras and adjudicated locally and internationally including Composition contests. AREAS OF EXPERTISE ⎫ International Baccalaureate (IB) Music and VCE Music Classroom Performance, & Music Investigation, with the ability to direct and accompany ensembles or, students from beginners to advanced levels.
