Rick’s career journey began in the late 1980s as a Graduate Engineer at Telstra, where he honed his skills in network design, construction, and problem-solving. With a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree from James Cook University, he spent over a decade delivering innovative solutions across a broad range of engineering projects, laying the foundation for his exceptional analytical and leadership abilities. Transitioning seamlessly into project management, Rick leveraged his extensive engineering expertise to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to impeccable quality standards. These formative years taught him the importance of strategy, stakeholder collaboration, and meticulous execution skills that would later serve as the backbone of his entrepreneurial ventures. Rick’s career pivoted once more as he entered Telstra’s Retail arm, embarking on a dynamic new chapter in commercial and channel management. Here, he mastered sales, marketing, team leadership, and business planning, proving himself as a leader who inspires through influence, credibility, and results-driven collaboration. His success in sales and management roles further deepened his passion for building businesses that thrive on innovation and customer-centricity. Today, Rick is the Managing Director of Sustainable Reefs, a pioneering aquaculture company specialising in the propagation of marine coral species in land-based facilities. Combining his engineering ingenuity with a relentless drive for excellence, Rick has positioned Sustainable Reefs as a global innovator in sustainable marine coral aquaculture. To complement this, Rick also oversees the growth of Coral Essentials, a premium marine aquarium supplement brand. Both ventures reflect his commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation, with a shared mission to preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the world’s coral reefs for future generations.
