I'm really just a hillbilly. I like hillbilly music and hillbilly food and hillbilly jokes. Hillbillies taught me how to stand up for yourself and your community in Northeast Mississippi in 1979 when our "betters" were trying to tell us we needed a nuclear power plant, but we stopped it. From then until now I've seen hillbillies, workers, hippies, convicts, students, and all kinds of people organize and insist together that we are human beings with rights and the world is big and it's ours, and we won't be boxed in and kept down and kept quiet by our "betters," and we do not have to accept the rule of fear and ignorance, illness and isolation, poverty and violence. People all over the world seem to be doing that all the time. And it turns out they have some pretty good music, good food, and good jokes, too. I always want to be part of this project.
